Tea for Creatives: Nailah Blades
Meet Nailah Blades. She’s the founder of Polka Dot Coaching, certified Life Coach, recovering sales & marketing rep, one-time mountain climber, and a professional idea generator + clarity-maker for young women who are teetering on the edge of greatness.
Define creativity. What does it mean to you? And how has it inspired your career?
It’s funny, it wasn’t until recently that I began to recognize and embrace my own creativity. I’ve come to realize that creativity is the purest form of self-expression. Creativity is tapping into your fullest self and unleashing that into the world. I’m a firm believer that we are all put in this world to carry out a mission – something that only we are uniquely suited to do. Creativity is the manifestation of that mission.
How do you navigate the creative process?
I look for the ‘Hell Yes’ ideas – those creative ideas that are so compelling that I simply must execute on them. That makes the rest of the creative process so much easier to navigate. Having that ‘Hell Yes’ mentality from the beginning helps propel me forward when I get stuck in a creative block. During my creative process, I’m continually tapping into myself and making sure that what I’m creating is in line with what I value.
Describe the biggest creative obstacle you’ve faced in the past. How did you hurdle it?
Fear is my biggest creative obstacle. I like knowing the answers and most of the time in creative endeavors, you won’t know the exact answer or outcome. Becoming increasingly more comfortable with taking a creative leap in the face of the unknown is my biggest creative hurdle. It is something I work on everyday.
Who is your favorite creative figure? How have they inspired your creativity?
I’m inspired by a complete mash-up of artists, musicians, photographers, authors, and visionaries. From Thich Nhat Hanh to Kanye West, I’m drawn to people who are bold in their creativity – doing what is in their heart without caring what anyone has to say about it. This inspires me to be bold and unapologetic with my own creativity.

Great post–and great teas, too. I think my challenge is having too many “Hell, yes” ideas. I like the values test you mention–makes it easier to choose.
