Tea for Creatives: Jonathan Mead
Meet Jonathan Mead, he helps people kill their day jobs and get paid to be who they are. He´s an inspiring entrepreneur and the founder of Illuminated Mind.
Define creativity. What does it mean to you? And how has it inspired your career?
Creativity to me is the continual energy of life being manifested in each moment. Creativity happens now, within everything. I don’t think it’s limited to just art or problem solving. Every movement, word, touch, laugh is an act of creativity, and there is potential for more richness of expression and experience than there often seems at the surface.
How do you navigate the creative process?
It really starts with a seed. An idea that’s exciting, that seems pregnant with possibilities. Usually I’ll ruminate on it for a while and if it seems fairly formed I’ll begin fleshing it out. If it needs more time to incubate I’ll plant the intention in my mind for it to grow and come back to it later. Of course, then comes implementation and ideas often evolve and change through the process of taking action and getting feedback from reality.
Describe the biggest creative obstacle you’ve faced in the past. How did you hurdle it?
Uncertainty, fear of how it will be received. It’s always something that’s present with any idea worth pursuing.
Who is your favorite creative figure? How have they inspired your creativity?
Rumi inspires me immensely. His writing in some of the most profound and beautiful I’ve read.
If you could choose one quote as your life mantra, what would it be?
“Smile, breathe, go slowly” —Thich Nhat Hanh
