Define creativity. What does it mean to you? And how has it inspired your career?
Creativity is your own perception of the world, manifested. It can be anything from the way you wear your hair, to your clothes, to a piece of art or poem. It is all a reflection of how you perceive the world, and your place in it. For me, that’s played into all the aforementioned factors, but also in regards to what I show the world, through my vehicle of Nomad•ness TV. I ooze creativity and I am involved with it in every step, from logo design to website colors, to how my traveling videos are edited and eventually broadcast.
How do you navigate the creative process?
Ideas come to me very spur f the moment and I have to run with it immediately. Whether I’m in the shower, or in the middle of an intense conversation, or on the subway, I always keep a journal on me. It is flooded with ideas that come out of nowhere. Then I go into my “mad scientist” zone in which I take a huge piece of paper. I used photo backdrop paper and I roll it across my wall. I get a bunch of Sharpies and I brainstorm, crazily, right there, on my wall. I’m a visual person so I connect with something when I see it. Once that part is finished, I can condense and put my jibberish into a formulated game plan on how to move forward with an idea.
Describe the biggest creative obstacle you’ve faced in the past. How did you hurdle it?
My biggest creative obstacle is always trying to do too much. I came up with a formula for myself that I work best when I have two projects going at once. Not more or less. With one I can get bored and I need constant stimulation. With more than two I get overwhelmed. Balancing between two solid creative projects usually fairs me well.
Who is your favorite creative figure? How have they inspired your creativity?
I’m going to answer this question more literal and give you my favorite artist, Jean Michel Basquiat. I was obsessed with him in college while minoring in Fine Art. I went to the apartment he used to live, and eventually died in from an overdose. I have a tattoo of part of one of his paintings. I really took to his life. Aside from the promiscuity and drug abuse, there was a childlike quality to Basquiat that, whether consciously or sub-consciously, he never really let go of. I feel that that quality is what fueled his work, and gave him the nonchalant courage to just go approach the people he admired most, and stay confident throughout the exchange. When you’re a kid, a person is a person. Their status is irrelevant. Yet, as an adult, having that mind frame and approach is deemed brave. At the end of the day, we all bleed the same. That way of thinking and approaching obstacles and people has faired me well. All they can do is say no. And if they say no, there’s always someone above them who can say yes.
If you could choose one quote as your life mantra, what would it be?
“Step out on nothing and land on something.” – Dr. Cornel West
