Define creativity. What does it mean to you? And how has it inspired your career?
Creativity is channeling energy: a higher power outside of yourself to design and manifest a vision. Whether the vision has to do with an artistic piece, a professional venture, or a personal relationship, creativity is an individual’s power to harness an intuitive sense of conviction that may not exist in the physical world just yet, but it is a person’s power to transform vision into truth, into reality. In my career, I’ve had to create many opportunities for myself. Because working as an artist and creative demands that I forge my own path towards a unique vision, I always have to find different ways to cultivate opportunities. I’ve had to be fearless about designing my ideal life, but also be patient and open to compromising when not everything isn’t exactly how I want it to be. To me, creativity is allowing yourself the freedom to create, innovate, and design options with what you have, and turning it into a masterpiece.
How do you navigate the creative process?
Most times, my creative process occurs during stillness. When I allow myself to just be, to be open, inspiration finds me. When that happens, I feel energized and too excited to hold the idea in. I am fearless about sharing my ideas with the world, because I know that once it’s out there, it jumpstarts the process of transformation. When I get an idea, it is usually sparked by visual inspirations that relate to it- my project, Glamourbaby Diaries, was born out of an editorial spread that fashion icon China Machado did with W Magazine. So many ideas rushed into my head, and I just started brainstorming, listing everything I wanted this idea to become. Then I share it with someone immediately, because talking things out helps me to not only generate and solidify ideas, but also to get another person’s feedback. The bonus is that collaboration often happens after this!
Describe the biggest creative obstacle you’ve faced in the past. How did you hurdle it?
I believe the biggest creative obstacle I’ve faced is what I’m going through now- I’ve moved thousands of miles away from home and halfway across the world in attempt to pursue and manifest an idea. It’s completely different where I’ve gone- although the place I’ve temporarily moved to is my home country, the environment is so different. I’m a fish in new water, and although I love it here, it’s definitely a huge adjustment. To hurdle it, I just continue to learn, soak things in, and be open to inspiration. I hold on with conviction to my ideas, and am eager to take in different perspectives so I can get a better understanding and a deeper love of the Philippines. I am completely open to how this country might change me and how it will influence my next creative idea.
Who is your favorite creative figure? How have they inspired your creativity?
Oprah. She has built an entire empire without compromising her integrity. She has been able to balance becoming a businesswoman and a personality, successfully managing her wealth while remaining grounded in her connection to the people. Most of all, she is a humanitarian. She reminds me to be unafraid to “live my best life”!
If you could choose one quote as your life mantra, what would it be?
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive.” – Howard Thurman
